We often use the "term" block in our world but what does that really mean?
When we say block, in the simplest terms, we mean a large, solid piece of hard material made of concrete.
What are concrete blocks, AKA concrete masonry units (CMUs), and how are they used?
What are CMUs?
Concrete and CMUs are building material made of cement, water and aggregates like sand, gravel or slate. Cement and concrete are often terms that are confused with one another; however, concrete is the end – or final – product. When you see our big red and white-chevron trucks driving down the street, it’s carrying the end product – concrete. We can make a CMU by simply molding and cubing concrete, creating various shapes and sizes.
Why Use CMUs?
The most common reasons CMUs are used include:
- It’s durable – it can stand up to winds of 200 mph
- Easy to install
- Fireproof
- Soundproof
- Low maintenance
- Can be decorative or ornamented
- Energy and cost efficient – helping to lower your monthly electric bills
- Environmentally friendly – it’s recyclable
When to use CMUs?
The beauty with CMUs is in its design. Kings Material carries so many different face units such as acoustical block; corduroy face; rock face; split face, and are designed to fit any area, corner and surface of your project.
There is so much you can do with CMUs. Create lasting memories by building a firepit to sit around, raised flower beds, beautiful water features and more. Check out our projects page – or talk to one of our team members - to get some fun ideas for your next project!
